Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp told reporters yesterday that he very nearly retired from football at the end of last season. Redknapp decided to stay on at QPR after successfully guiding the club back to the Premier League in the play-off final.

The 67-year-old, who took over at Loftus Road in 2012, has been instrumental in reversing the fortunes of the R's in recent seasons and is now busy preparing for his second spell with the club in the Premier League.

But Redknapp admits that it could have been very different had Bobby Zamora not scored the winning goal in the play-off final.

"If we hadn't gone up this year I would have turned it in," Redknapp said.

"I would have definitely packed up. I wouldn't have gone back and done another year in the Championship, it didn't appeal to me any more.

"If we had got beat I would have turned it in, definitely. With 10 minutes to go I was thinking 'what golf club should I join this year - should I play here or there?' and then suddenly Bobby ruined it all."
