Shaw picked up a groin strain in Watford defeat

Manchester United manager José Mourinho slammed defender Luke Shaw for his part in Watford’s second goal in the Red Devils 3-1 defeat at Vicarage Road yesterday, despite the 21-year-old being injured at the time.

Luke Shaw, who is on the road to recovery from a leg break suffered in a Champions League tie against PSV Eindhoven a year ago, was blasted by manager José Mourinho for failing to fully carry out his duties in the build up to Watford’s second goal, as the Hornets inflicted a third straight defeat upon the Red Devils with a 3-1 rout at Vicarage Road yesterday afternoon.

After returning to Manchester, Shaw underwent a scan at United’s AON Training complex today, which revealed that the young England defender had picked up a groin strain during the Watford defeat.

Mourinho was critical of Shaw’s performance against the Hornets, and didn’t hold back in letting the former Southampton player know how he felt, with The Times reporting today that many United players were shocked by the Portuguese coach’s harsh outburst.

The Red Devils face a midweek trip to Northampton in the League Cup before taking on reigning Premier League champions Leicester City at Old Trafford at Saturday lunchtime.

Mourinho will be hoping to avoid a fourth successive defeat when his side face the Cobblers at Sixfields, as they shape up for what has now become a must win tie against the Foxes.
