Gimenez open to Old Trafford switch

Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez is prepared to push through a move to Manchester United during the summer transfer window.

The Uruguay international joined Atleti from Danubio in the summer of 2013, and has since evolved into a regular for the Capital outfit.

Gimenez has, however, seen his place come under huge threat this season with manager Diego Simeone in favour of Diego Godin and Stefan Savic for the central defensive partnership.

Moreover, academy graduate Lucas Hernandez is also understood to be in the mix under Simeone this campaign, and this has sort of unsettled Gimenez at Atleti.

According to The Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils could retain their interest in Gimenez in the summer having previously considered an approach at the turn of the year.

Both Gimenez and Victor Lindelof were on Jose Mourinho's radar during the winter period, but he decided against a move owing to the impressive partnership of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo.

Gimenez is currently contracted to Atletico Madrid until the summer of 2018, and the club may have to compromise his asking price as United are unlikely to match his hefty £56m release clause.
