Rafa Benitez is keen to bring another winger to the club for Newcastle's return to the Premier League, and the door has opened up to bring Townsend back to the club following Sam Allardyce's resignation from Crystal Palace.

Townsend moved to Newcastle from Tottenham back in January of 2016 for £12 million and was impressive, scoring four goals in 13 games, in an otherwise poor Newcastle side who were relegated that season.

Following Newcastle's relegation, Townsend moved to Crystal Palace for £13 million, just six months after moving to Newcastle. After a poor start to the season, Townsend saw his performances pick up after the appointment of Sam Allardyce

The winger seemed to enjoy football under the former England boss as Crystal Palace avoided relegation and ended the season strong.

Rafa Benitez tried to bring Townsend to St. James' Park in the winter transfer window following Townsend's poor start to the season but a deal couldn't be reached.

Now, the Chronicle Live has reported that Newcastle are still interested in Townsend and Sam Allardyce's resignation from Crystal Palace will likely give them a better chance of bringing the England international to the club.

Rafa Benitez wants to start his summer business early and has already seen a £6 million bid for midfielder Christian Atsu accepted by Chelsea

Townsend was crucial in Palace's fight to avoid relegation, scoring three goals and assisting four in the final three months of the season.
