West Ham and Burnley hope to sign Ian Maatsen on loan
Burnley and West Ham will go head-to-head to secure a loan deal to sign Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen. The Dutch left-back, who also operates as an occasional winger, could be available for a season-long loan as Chelsea indicate that the 21-year-old Dutch youth international is available for transfer.
Maatsen arrived at Stamford Bridge back in 2019, and three successful loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City and Burnley followed. Maatsen was an important member of Burnley's successful Championship title victory in 2022/23, and the Clarets have made a bid to re-sign the player for yet another season. West Ham, on the other hand, have struggled in their pursuit of new faces and see the 5 foot 6 defender as potential cover for the hard-working Aaron Cresswell.
At 33-years-old, Cresswell understands that he is unlikely to be a regular first-team player. The defender is likely to require an under study for the new campaign, and thus the Hammers' move for Maatsen appears to be going forward.
Maatsen had been linked with a place in Chelsea's squad this year. However, the Blues appear to be ready to let the Dutchman depart for a short while to earn more regular first-team football.
