Danny Mills slams Celtic broken promises as ‘Brilliant’ player snubs Hoops to agree move

EXCLUSIVE

Danny Mills has slammed Celtic for their high-stakes poker game leading to the collapse in transfer talks with Motherwell attacker David Turnbull.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England international is convinced the Hoops tried to move the goalposts at the eleventh hour in negotiations with the 19-year-old and that is why he has snubbed them to head to the Premier League.

Motherwell announced on Wednesday of last week that they had accepted an offer from Celtic for Turnbull but, 48 hours later, the Hoops used their Twitter account to reveal they had failed to agree terms with the player’s agent.

“This kind of thing actually happens a lot, but doesn’t usually come out publicly,” Mills told Football Insider. “There would have been promises made by Celtic to Turnbull and he would have been told certain things.

“He then turns up to sign, finds the goalposts have been moved and he has obviously said, ‘I’m not signing for you’. It becomes a very high stake game of poker and it’s a matter of who blinks first.

“I would expect that’s what’s happened. Some part of the deal has been altered, or tweaked by Celtic, and Turnbull would have said, ‘I’m not accepting it’.”

The treble winners took the highly unusual step of releasing a statement to reveal they had made Turnbull a “magnificent” offer, warning him to take it or leave it.

The attacking midfielder has chosen to leave it as he is now on the verge of joining Norwich City, who, a club source has told Football Insider, have matched Motherwell’s asking price and could announce his arrival today.

“Turnbull has stood firm and he is good enough to immediately find another club, and one who are in the Premier League,” added Mills to Football Insider. “That shows he’s a brilliant talent.

“He’s young enough and good enough to do that. I admire him for standing up to Celtic and think that shows great strength of character from the young man.”

In other Celtic news, it can be REVEALED that one of the club’s Scottish players has agreed terms with club giants as he’s set for sensational transfer.
