Leeds sign centre-back from Barcelona on two-year contract – Insider

By Harry Sykes

Leeds United have continued their extensive recruitment drive by signing centre-back Oriol Rey from Barcelona, according to an Elland Road insider.

The unofficial Leeds United Academy Twitter account has claimed that Rey, 19, has already penned a two-year contract with the Yorkshire giants.

It is said that the teenage defender will join up with United’s Under-23s rather than their senior side.

Former Real Madrid director Ivan Bravo, who was appointed to the Leeds board at the end of last season, is overseeing an overhaul of the academy and has already brought in a number of rising stars who the club hope can develop into first-team players.

Spaniards Madger Gomes, Alejandro Machuca and Adrian Balboa have all signed, along with Moroccan attacker Ousama Siddiki from Real Madrid.

Rey appears to be the latest youngster who will link up with the development squad and aim to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Ronaldo Vieira and Kalvin Phillips.

The unofficial Leeds United academy account is establishing a reputation as an increasingly reliable source of Leeds youth team news.

It has previously broken stories about young players undergoing Leeds trials, including Huddersfield midfielder Jack Boyle and Middlesbrough defender Callum Johnson.

The account also revealed earlier this year that Theo Richardson had been told that he was free to leave Leeds and then broke the news that he was undergoing a trial at Manchester United shortly before he signed, which was confirmed this week.

In other Leeds transfer news, the club have agreed the terms of a stunning £7million deal.
