Stephane Sessegnon responds when asked if he regrets Sunderland move

Stephane Sessegnon was a popular figure among Sunderland fans initially after moving from Paris Saint-Germain in 2010.

Now, most Paolo Di Canio claims should probably be taken with a rather substantial pinch of salt. Yet the Italian’s reason for allowing Stephane Sessegnon to leave Wearside on the final day of the 2013 transfer window may have resonated with Sunderland fans.

As reported by The Guardian, the madcap former Black Cats’ boss claimed that Sessegnon no longer cared about the club: “His time was finished at Sunderland because he was not capable anymore to give his best.”

And the play-maker, who then spent three seasons with West Brom, has done little to counteract Di Canio’s claims.

“I think I was badly advised,” Sessegnon told Le Parisien when discussing his move from PSG to Sunderland in 2010.

“If I had waited a few months I could have signed for a better club than Sunderland but I wanted to play in England. Life is made of bad choices.”

Now that is hardly a ringing endorsement out the North East club. Yes, Sessegnon may have spent each of his two-and-a-half seasons in the North East embroiled in an almost permanent battle against relegation but Sessegnon was also well supported on Wearside and admired for his quick feet and dribbling ability.

In fact, David Moyes’ dour side could certainly do with a player of Sessegnon’s unpredictability right about now, especially with their relegation from the Premier League confirmed after ten years in the top flight.

And it appears that a side badly lacking in creativity face a tough couple of seasons ahead.
