‘We’ll try’: President will offer Tottenham player an escape route in January

Benfica president Luis Felipe Vieira has opened the door for Tottenham Hotspur man Gedson Fernandes to make an early return to the Lisbon giants during the January transfer window, while speaking to TSF.

It is just nine months since Spurs snapped up the highly-rated Portuguese midfielder on an initial 18-month loan deal.

Now, however, there appears to be more chance of Jose Mourinho professing an undying love for Arsene Wenger than there is of the London giants signing Gedson permanently for a staggering £56 million (Telegraph).

Despite a gruelling fixture schedule that has often forced Spurs to play two games in two different competitions just 48 hours apart, the 21-year-old loanee has barely kicked a ball in 2020/21.

His only action thus far was a rather forgettable 63-minute outing in September’s EFL Cup victory over Chelsea.

Amid speculation from Record suggesting that Gedson’s loan spell could be cut short by six months in January, Benfica’s long-serving president has now had his say.

“It will depend on whether the purchase option will be exercised or not. If not, obviously we will try to get him back (in the winter),” Vieira admits.

Gedson has been left out of the matchday squad for four of Tottenham’s five Premier League fixtures thus far, with the arrival of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele’s rejuvination pushing him down the pecking order.
