Report: Sander Berge wants to become free agent, Arsenal and Newcastle are keen

Sander Berge could now see out the final 18 months of his Sheffield United contract amid interest from Arsenal and Newcastle United.

That’s according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, who claims that Berge is planning to become a free agent in 2024.

Berge is now into the final 18 months of his contract with Sheffield United and some have been expecting a departure.

A sale didn’t come in January despite major interest from the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle, and it seems that Berge isn’t pushing for a summer transfer either.

Berge instead wants to leave the Blades for nothing in 2024 and become one of the most in-demand free agents on the market.

That will be a frustration for Sheffield United, who would probably rather rake in some cash for their star midfielder than see him go for nothing.

Arsenal and Newcastle United face fight to convince Sander Berge

Berge is bound to attract major interest from Premier League clubs but some would probably rather have him this summer.

The Chronicle report that Arsenal registered an interest in signing Berge in the weeks leading up to the transfer deadline.

Arsenal ended up signing Jorginho instead but are still expected to move for a new midfielder in the summer too.

Arsenal assistant Albert Stuivenberg worked with Berge at Genk and has previously hailed the Norwegian as ‘intelligent’ and a ‘future leader’.

An international teammate of Martin Odegaard too, a move to Arsenal does make some sense but expect Newcastle United to be in the mix too.

Newcastle wanted to take Berge on loan with a view to a permanent summer move, but no deal was done before the window slammed shut.

The Magpies are bound to be keeping tabs on Berge but convincing him to change his plans this summer sounds tricky.

Champions League football could turn Berge’s head, as could big wages; ultimately, what else would he really want in his next move?

A hugely talented box-to-box midfielder, Berge has Premier League quality and he is bound to receive offers this summer. It just depends on how determined he is to become a free agent.
