So there we have it. There was no real 11th hour drama at Melwood and we now know the squad Jurgen Klopp will have to work with. Until January, at least.

Liverpool were not expected to bring anyone in on transfer deadline day, with the focus instead on further trimming back of the squad.

So it proved. Out went Luis Alberto, joining Lazio on a permanent basis, and Andre Wisdom, who moved on loan to Red Bull Salzburg. Mario Balotelli and Lazar Markovic also went, one permanently one on a year's loan, with Tiago Ilori and Mamadou Sakho staring at a season playing U23s football at best.

Strong enough? The debate on that particular issue will rage for months to come. But this is what Klopp has been left with....

First XI

Liverpool potential first XI for the 2016/17 season

Let's use the team that started at Tottenham as a template, bringing in Emre Can for Gini Wijnaldum in midfield.

Issues? James Milner at left back, is that really a viable season-long option? Is the midfield strong/creative enough? Can Firmino be the line-leading striker on a consistent basis? Can Klopp persist with Simon Mignolet for another season?

Second XI

Possible Liverpool second XI for 2016/17

Some strength in depth here, particularly in terms of forwards. Both Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi will feel they can become a part of the first XI, as will Wijnaldum, Loris Karius and Alberto Moreno.

But there's a 17-year-old at right back and a 19-year-old at centre back – the latter of which hasn't played since last October.

Marko Grujic, 20, is in his first season in England, while Lucas Leiva is in his 10th. Nonetheless, Liverpool look to have some decent options, though more so in forward areas than defensively.

What's left?

Well Mamadou Sakho will still be here – and will be confident that he can force his way back into the club's good books, despite the message coming out of Anfield at present.

Tiago Ilori will be less confident, with Liverpool having been desperate to offload him in the last few days.

Youngsters Connor Randall, Cameron Brannagan, Sheyi Ojo and Pedro Chirivella remain, as does not-so-young Kevin Stewart. Emerging teenagers Ben Woodburn and Ovie Ejaria offer genuine promise beneath that.

It is important, of course, to point out that the person whose opinion matters most is Jurgen Klopp, and he has been bullish in his praise for his current squad. He insisted there would be no signings for signings' sake, and he was true to his word.

Debate among supporters will continue, and so it should - after all, football without fans is nothing - but in the meantime Reds have to trust their manager, and the players at his disposal.

After all, it's another 122 days before the transfer window re-opens....
