The four attributes Liverpool look for all in all potential new signings have been laid bare by the club's academy head.

Liverpool - like all Premier League clubs - employ a team of coaches, scouts and analysts in order to spot players who they feel can improve them, from the academy all the way up to Jurgen Klopp's senior squad.

Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Mohamed Salah and Georginio Wijnaldum are among the players who have come in and made a difference in recent seasons.

But what criteria does the club use when going out into the transfer market and identifying new talent?

Head of Liverpool Academy's football operations Nick Marshall has lifted the lid on what the Reds look for when weighing up a potential addition.

"There are four attributes and attitudes generally that clubs and coaches will look for, and I have always used these to identify the progress and success of a player," he told TheTransitionPhase .

"To be successful, you will generally need to be able to possess three out of the four, and you are going to have to be at least a 9/10 in at least one of them for you to really stand out.

  • Technical attributes for your position
  • Tactical awareness (football intelligence)
  • Psychological, social and mental attributes
  • Physical attributes

"If you look at top performers in any sport, you will generally see they have at least three of these, and be really strong in them.

"If you have all four, then you are laughing."
