BLACKBURN Rovers completed a transfer deadline day double swoop for Charlie Mulgrew and Marvin Emnes.

Versatile Scotland international Mulgrew put pen to paper on a three-year deal after failing to agree a new contract with Celtic.

And 20 minutes before the summer transfer window shut former Holland Under-21 international Emnes joined on loan from Swansea City until January 15.

The arrival of the experienced duo means Owen Coyle has made 12 signings since taking over the Rovers reins three months ago.

Only one, the £250,000 capture of Bristol City left-back Derrick Williams, was for a fee.

Eight first-team players left at the end of their contracts on June 30 before captain Grant Hanley and centre-back partner Shane Duffy were sold to Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion for £5.5m and £4.5m respectively.

Coyle tried to use more of the proceeds of Duffy’s sale to further bolster his squad.

But it is understood he saw up to three cash offers – one being for Lens centre-back Abdoul Ba – rejected in the final days of the transfer window.

There were no departures from Rovers on deadline day.

Earlier in the window Wolves had a bid turned down for Ben Marshall.

But yesterday there were no fresh offers for the winger who, with less than a year of his current contract to run, has so far rejected Rovers’ attempts to tie him down to a new deal.

Danny Guthrie will also remain at Ewood Park for the time being.

The midfielder had been told the club would not stand in his way if he attracted interest.

Guthrie will now have further competition for his place after Mulgrew headed south of the border after six highly successful years with Celtic.

The Scotland international, 30, who has continued to train with the Glasgow outfit throughout the summer, said: “I’m delighted.

“Once I knew of the interest here I couldn’t wait to come down and get everything sorted.

“It is a great club with a great history and I’m hoping I can help them achieve what the manager here wants to achieve.

“He’s got a great vision for the club and we are all pushing forward for that and I’m delighted to be involved.

“I had one or two options out there but once Blackburn came in I knew it was the club for me.

“There has been a lot of good Scottish players and managers that have been here and there’s a good feeling about the place so I’m happy to come on board. This is the place I wanted to be.

“I’m feeling fit, I’ve trained for the last three or four weeks at Celtic and with the international break now it is good timing.

“It is a chance for me to top my fitness up and I’m really looking forward to getting going in the first match.”

Mulgrew, who can play in defence as well as midfield, will be in line to make his Rovers debut in the trip to QPR on Saturday week.

As will Emnes after the former Middlesbrough attacker became Coyle’s final addition of the transfer window.

The 28-year-old scored 31 goals in 162 games for Boro, including 18 in 2011-12, before making a £3.2m move to Swansea where he was restricted to just four appearances last season and one in the current campaign.
