Quinn steps down at Sunderland

04 October 2011 - 05:01

Niall Quinn has stepped down as chairman of Sunderland, and will take a role focusing on the club's international development and commercial interests abroad.

  • Chelsea banned from signing JJ Gabriel until December
  • Newcastle eyeing shock swoop for Arsenal winger
  • Owner Ellis Short will take day to day running of the club on.

Niall Quinn said of the change: "He'll be a fantastic chairman and taking this role on speaks volumes about his ambition for the club."

Short said: "With financial fair play rules coming into effect, it is essential for the long-term success of the club that we develop interests on a global scale and there's no one better than Niall to sell the ethos of Sunderland to an international audience."
