Wolves axe Mick McCarthy

Wolves axe Mick McCarthy

13 February 2012 - 14:25

Wolverhampton Wanderers have parted company with Mick McCarthy after the weekend's 5-1 defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers West Brom. McCarthy has been under some pressure for several weeks, and chairman Steve Morgan has decided to give the former Republic of Ireland manager his marching orders.

  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Villa trip
  • Gabriel Magalhaes to sign new Arsenal deal

  • McCarthy's spell of five and a half years at Molineux comes to an end after fan backlash for a recent run of poor form in the Premier League. Last weekend's 5-1 defeat to WBA appeared to be the final nail in the coffin for the manager, who has been under growing pressure.

A statement from Wolves read: "Wolves have today announced that manager Mick McCarthy has left the club with immediate effect.

"The board took the difficult decision to terminate Mick's contract after a run of form which has seen Wolves pick up only 14 points in the last 22 league games, after a promising start to the season, culminating in yesterday's 5-1 defeat at home to West Bromwich Albion.

"Terry Connor will take charge of team training in the interim until a new manager is appointed.

"The board would like to place on record their sincere thanks and appreciation to Mick McCarthy and he leaves with the very best wishes of everyone connected to the club."
