Chelsea track Nigeria star Joel Obi

15 April 2012 - 07:59

Chelsea club officials have been in discussions regarding a move for Nigerian international midfielder Joel Obi. The 20 year old central midfielder has forced his way into Inter Milan's first team and is the Blues' top summer target.

  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • Joel Obi came through the youth ranks at Inter Milan, where he first made an impression over 7 years ago as a 13 year old.

Since then, Obi has forced his way into Inter's starting eleven on a regular basis. The 5 foot 9 midfielder is being lined up as a possible replacement for Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel, both players whose time at Stamford Bridge could be coming to an end this summer, as the Blues prepare a massive clear out operation.

The Blues are believed to focused on their youth policy, and in turn signing the best young players from across Europe.

As Obi has already appeared 11 times for his national team, he should have no issue securing a work permit in the Premier League.
