Former Wigan defender Paul Scharner announces his retirement

05 September 2013 - 00:31

Former Latics defender Paul Scharner has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33.

The Austrian recently part ways with Bundesliga outfit Hamburger SV following a dispute over the terms in his contract.

  • Predicted Chelsea line-up (4-2-3-1) vs Aston Villa, Palmer starts
  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Villa trip

  • Paul Scharner enjoyed a four-year spell with Wigan in the Premier League before making a switch to West Bromwich Albion during the summer of 2010.

However, he made his comeback at the DW stadium on loan from the German outfit at the last phase of last season, where he helped the Latics clinch the FA Cup, which was their first major trophy in their history, with a surprise win over Manchester City in the final encounter.
