Tottenham midfielder Lewis Holtby has edged closer to a six month loan move to his former club Schalke 04.Tim Sherwood, the Spurs manager, has decided that the German international is surplus to requirements for the time being and can leave White Hart Lane for his former club.

It is understood that Schalke also have first option on a permanent deal in the summer.
