All of Europe’s major leagues are now well underway and sports betting sites have shifted the odds on who will win them in reaction to results so far. Some pre-season favourites have been knocked down a peg or two after some poor results, while others have seen their odds shorten after a stellar start to the new campaign. Here we round up each of Europe’s top five leagues and who is in the race to win them.
Spain
Champions Barcelona were heavy favourites going into the 2016/17 season, and they are still favourites but not by such a heavy margin after an unconvincing start to the season. Luis Enrique’s men have taken 10 points from 15 after losing to newly promoted Alaves, and find themselves already three points behind Real Madrid. Los Blancos have been in sensational form since Zinedine Zidane took over as manager, and they have gone in from 13/8 at the start of the season to current odds of 13/10 with online betting sites to win La Liga. Those same online betting firms have moved the odds on Barcelona out from 3/4 to 5/6 in response to their shaky start. Meanwhile Atletico Madrid, who are unbeaten in their opening five games but have won just two of them, have drifted out to 14/1. Right now most of the money is going on Barcelona, perhaps in response to their 7-0 Champions League demolition of Celtic, but many may fancy Real as they have a better record in La Liga than Barcelona since Zidane took over.
England
Man City started the season as 5/2 favourites to win the Premiership with online betting sites. They then won all five of their opening games, including a 2-1 victory over Man Utd at Old Trafford, and they have gone into just 4/6 to win it, despite us only being in September. Pre-season second favourites Man Utd have drifted all the way out to 14/1 after following the derby defeat with a 3-1 loss to Watford, while Chelsea’s odds have also ballooned after a shaky start. The online betting companies currently think Man City’s closest contenders will be Liverpool, who have gone into 6/1 after a great start to the season that has taken in wins over Chelsea and champions Leicester. The Foxes seem to have no hope of defending their crown and are 125/1.
Italy
Juventus started the season as heavy 8/13 favourites to win a sixth consecutive Serie A title and the odds have shortened further still, despite a defeat at the hands of Inter. They have won all their other games and top the table, so that makes sense. They also weakened their two biggest rivals by buying Gonzalo Higuain from Napoli and Miralem Pjanic from Roma in the summer and look unstoppable from an online betting perspective right now.
Germany
Bayern Munich are even more dominant in Germany than Juventus are in Italy and the odds have shortened to a measly 2/17 on them winning the Bundesliga this season after a perfect 100 percent start to the season. They shrugged off the loss of manager Pep Guardiola to Man City and seem even better under Carlo Ancelotti, who has brought the best out of Robert Lewandowski and is bolstered by the signing of Mats Hummels at the back. Their closest rivals last season, Borussia Dortmund, have had a poor start to the season, causing the online betting sites to push their odds out to 8/1, and surely nobody can stop Bayern.
France
PSG are similarly dominant in France since being bought by oil rich billionaires, but have not started this season as well as they were expected to. But despite losing to Monaco in their first home defeat in 17 months, they are now just one point off the top and are 1/6 favourites with online betting companies. They are another team that look unstoppable, so an accumulator bet on PSG, Juventus, Bayern, Man City and your pick of Real or Barca looks a good option right now.
