Bournemouth linked with Kostas Mitroglu

Bournemouth are rumoured to be in the race to sign former Fulham forward Kostas Mitroglu. The Greek international currently plays for Benfica and has been in inspired form since making the move to Portugal.

  •

Mitroglu has been somewhat of a journeyman in recent years; after his short spell with Fulham the striker returned to his former club Olympiacos on loan for a season; before spending a season with Benfica. Benfica eventually opted to sign Mitroglu on a permanent deal after the striker scored 20 goals in 32 goals during his temporary spell at the club.

The 28-year-old 6 foot 2 striker has indicated that he would one day like to prove himself in the Premier League after his disastrous spell at Craven Cottage. Mitroglu's contract at Benfica expires in 2019 and the player is valued by Benfica in the region of 15 million euros.

Mitroglu has shone this season in very difficult circumstances, often playing as a lone striker. As proved in yesterday's 1-0 victory over German giants Borussia Dortmund, the forward is very comfortable against the bigger teams and a transfer away from Portugal is sure to appeal to the Greek international.

Bournemouth's efforts to sign Mitroglu could be hampered by rumoured interest from elsewhere, though. It is understood that Italian sides Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Genoa have all been monitoring the striker's situation closely. The Italian clubs have more transfer budget at their disposal and have indicated that Mitroglu would be a major coup in the summer should a deal be completed.

Mitroglu has two and a half years remaining on his Benfica deal and the club want to sit down with the striker to discuss extending his stay even longer than that. The only thing that jeopardises a new contract being signed and sealed is the interest of teams from abroad. With the striker's continued good form, keeping hold of the player at Benfica will be increasingly difficult; there are many potential suitors for he player. Mitroglu will be just as important in Benfica's upcoming return tie against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Bournemouth coach Eddie Howe is ready to improve his squad in the summer if his club stay in the Premier League and the Bournemouth board have promised the manager a hefty transfer fund as a reward.
