69-year-old former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has been sacked by Shenzhen after just six months in charge of the Chinese club. The Swedish coach has been let go after a disappointing start to life in China.
Eriksson has been released from a three-year deal signed with Shenzhen.
Eriksson took charge of the club in December last year and after eight games without a win, the club's owners have decided to let the veteran Swede go. Shenzhen Kaisa Football Club was amongst the clubs expected to compete at the very top in League One this year, but a drab performance under Eriksson indicates differently. Eriksson had been in charge of Shanghai SIPG prior to making the move south to Shenzhen.
The former England boss is said to be looking for a move back to Europe and is even contemplating a coaching role in his home country of Sweden.
According to reports, IFK Gothenburg is amongst the many teams who are considering making Eriksson their coach.
However, on the contrary, many are speculating that this could have been Sven-Goran Eriksson's last job in football. The Swede coached Portuguese side Benfica back in the early 80's; before moving to Italy where he enjoyed spells with Roma, Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Lazio. A five year stint as England boss, followed up with further international roles as Mexico and Ivory Coast manager were sandwiched between his time coaching the blue side of Manchester and Leicester City.
Eriksson made the move to China in June 2013 where he took charge at Guangzhou R&F; before being signed up by Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG. He finished the season as runners up in 2015 and qualified for the AFC Champions League. Andre Villas-Boas eventually took over from Eriksson in November 2016. Eriksson had been brought in to replace legendary midfielder Clarence Seedorf at Shenzhen FC, but failed to produce the goods in his short spell in charge.
The odds that Eriksson could be set for retirement have reduced significantly, down to 3/1 on some sites. The latest odds on NetBet Sport could better that, with Eriksson still reportedly undecided about what he wants to do next.
Should Eriksson call time on his career, he will surely go down as one of the greatest Scandinavian managers of all time and will be fondly remembered for his spell in charge of one of the England national football team.
