Van Der Wiel joins Cagliari

Van Der Wiel joins Cagliari

25 August 2017 - 18:13

Italian side Cagliari have completed a move for Dutch right-back Gregory Van Der Wiel on a three-year contract. The Italian side have agreed on a package with Turkish club Fenerbahce.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • The Sardinian club have been locked in talks for over a month to sign the full-back and the player will become the first Netherlands international to play for the team. Turkish club Fenerbahce informed Van Der Wiel that he would be surplus to requirements at the end of last season and the player has decided to seek a fresh challenge in favour of regular first-team action.

A statement on Cagliari's official site confirmed the deal.

Cagliari will be hoping van der Wiel's signing will kick start their season, having opened up their Serie A campaign with defeat. Van Der Wiel joined the Sardinian club for a fee of around 7.5 million euros and the player will earn a reported 50,000 euros a week at his new club.

According to Football Italia, van der Wiel will be brought in to ease the loss of Marco Borriello, who today left Cagliari for Spal.
