Are Crystal Palace Already Fighting a Losing Battle?

22 September 2017 - 16:20

We may only be five games into the Premier League season but Crystal Palace have already hit the headlines for the wrong reasons. They have started off the season in the worst possible way.

  • Arsenal to swap Gabriel Jesus for Inter Milan star?
  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • Losing every single game, not scoring a goal and embarrassing themselves by sacking Frank de Boer, just 77 days after giving him control of the club. It has been a terrible start for the club, but after five games, are they already fighting a losing battle for survival?

No team should ever worry about relegation after just five games and right now this isn’t a losing battle for Crystal Palace. However, looking at what is to come over the next few weeks, they could find themselves in a whole lot of trouble in a month from now, and potentially still without any points at all.

The next few games are going to dictate how this season turns out for Crystal Palace. They have appointed Roy Hodgson to be their manager and he will be desperate to have a good start. The club’s board have made their stance known and they now have to back Hodgson and trust him to get them out of the messy position they are in.

However, their run of fixtures hardly lends itself to a good start, and Hodgson is going to have his work cut out over the next few weeks. September for Crystal Palace is rounded off with two away games against the Premier League’s current top two teams, Manchester City and Manchester United. It would be a huge surprise to see Crystal Palace pick anything up from those games, likely leaving them with 0 points after the first two months of the season.

Onto October and things don’t get much easier for Crystal Palace. They begin the month returning home, which will help them out, although the visitors to Selhurst Park will be Chelsea, last year’s Premier League winners. After the visit of Chelsea, Crystal Palace hit the road again and travel up to Newcastle, who have come to life recently and that is going to be a very tough away game for them. Their first two games in October are going to be very difficult and they may have to wait until the end of October for their first realistic chance of picking up points. The latest football betting shows Crystal Palace are favourites for relegation following their poor start to the season and things really need to change soon.

The final game of October for Crystal Palace sees them play at home to West Ham, a team who have been very hit and miss at the start of the season. This represents the most realistic chance Crystal Palace have of picking up points in October and although it is a long way off, this game will already have been marked off on the calendar.

If you do think Crystal Palace will beat West Ham, then the most likely outcome over the next few games is that Crystal Palace will end October with just three Premier League points. If you don’t think they will beat them then it is likely they will end October with no points, whichever way you think right now, it is fair to say the future looks very bleak for them, unless something unexpected happens.
