Brighton and Hove Albion have been linked with a surprise transfer swoop for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Mikel San Jose. The player, who is competent playing in midfield or in the heart of defence, could make a move to Chris Hughton's side for a fee of around £8.5 million.
Mikel San Jose has previously had a three year spell on the books of Liverpool back in 2007 until 2010, but he failed to make an appearance for the first team and later moved to Bilbao. From there, San Jose has gone on to become a first team regular, playing in over 250 games for the Basque side. San Jose also has 7 caps to his name for Spain, as well as having represented the Basque Country 6 times.Â
Brighton and Hove Albion coach Chris Hughton has long been a fan of San Jose and it is understood that his club tried to make a move for San Jose last August but was rejected immediately by the midfielder's club. Instead, Hughton is confident that a deal can be agreed on this coming summer and his club are to offer the player a long-term four-year contract with the Premier League club.
Mikel San Jose, 28, will reject the interest of Villarreal and Valencia to make a move to England and the player has informed his agent that he would prefer a transfer to the Premier League as he feels that he has unfinished business in England's top flight.Â
San Jose has two years remaining on his current deal at Bilbao and the club have reportedly stopped all efforts to agree on a new contract with the 6 foot 1 player.
