Southampton to bid for French youngster

French club Lyon are coming to terms with the fact that Premier League club Southampton, who guaranteed their survival in the top flight this week with an important victory over rivals Swansea City, are to bid for striker Willem Geubbels. The 16-year-old has broken several records since his emergence on to the scene and is in fact the first player born in the 21st century to have played in UEFA's Europa League.

  • Arsenal leading race to sign Belgian midfielder

  • Southampton have deployed their head scout to watch the Villeurbanne born striker in action, who has not just appeared in European competition this year, but also has played in Ligue 1 for Lyon. The impressive rise of the 16-year-old is even more credible considering Lyon have the likes of Memphis Depay amongst their array of attacking talent on the books. Striker Geubbels has played for France's youth sides, having most recently appeared for France's under-18 team.

It is understood that Southampton manager Mark Hughes has been highly recommended the striker and the Saints will pay a fee of around 18 million euros to secure Geubbels' signature.

The youngster has yet to have signed his first professional contract but a move to England at such a young age is certain to capture the attention of the media.

Southampton survived this campaign by the skin of their teeth; but can they survive next season in the Premier League? Signings of the calibre of Guebbels will make a huge difference.
