Newly promoted Premier League side Fulham have joined the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen striker Joel Pohjanpalo on a permanent basis, having made a reported 15 million euro transfer offer to sign the 23-year-old Finland international during the summer transfer window. Pohjanpalo has spent past seasons on loan at German clubs Aalen and Fortuna Dusseldorf and prior to that played for HJK Helsinki and Klubi-04 in his home country.
Fulham, boosted by the 150 million GBP jackpot for promotion to the English top flight, have been busy planning their transfer targets for the upcoming season and 23-year-old striker Joel Pohjanpalo appears to be a top target. The Finnish international initially struggled since his move to Germany, but over the past 12 months has finally forced his way into the Bayer Leverkusen first-team on a regular basis and last season happened to be a breakout campaign for the striker. Pohjanpalo is looking set for a move to England according to multiple sports betting sites, and if Fulham are indeed the favourites to secure his signature, the English club will beat French sides Troyes, Tours, Rennes, Marseille and Lille as well as German duo Hamburg and Wolfsburg to the striker's coveted signature. It has been rumoured that Spanish club Valencia were also closely monitoring Pohjanpalo's progress at Leverkusen.
At international level, Pohjanpalo has played for Finland's youth team and made his debut in 2012, finally forcing his way into the country's full squad in November of the same year and making his debut against Cyprus in a 3-0 win. Since then the striker has remained an important part of Finland's national side and is expected to be a member of the squad for years to come.
Fast in attack, good off of the ball and an accomplished striker in the air, there are many reasons why some of Europe's top clubs have been closely monitoring Pohjanpalo. Players are famously very expensive when they are still in their youth and the same counts for the Bayer Leverkusen man, who has been valued in the region of 20 million euros by the Bundesliga side.
The striker has informed his agent that he is desperate to make a move to England and will stop at nothing to ensure his deal to the Cottagers is pushed through in time for the beginning of the new Premier League season.
Pohjanpalo will not be taking part in the World Cup in Russia and this is likely to be a positive for Fulham; as the striker will not be catching the eye of other teams from across the club in the showpiece tournament.
The forward will reportedly sign a four year contract to move to England and has just two years remaining on his deal with Bayer Leverkusen. The player will arrive in England for talks in two weeks time and a deal is expected to be agreed just prior to August 1st 2018, prior to Fulham's pre-season campaign and having taken a lengthy summer break to recover from a busy season in the Bundesliga last year.
