England manager Gareth Southgate has put pen to paper on a new contract with the Football Association that will see him as manager of the national side until 2022. Southgate helped guide England to their first World Cup semi-final since 1990 and his team were praised for their performances in Russia.

  • Southgate had been widely expected to agree a new deal in the coming weeks and yesterday the FA confirmed an agreement had been reached.

Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn said: "I think the performance of the team at the World Cup resonated with fans, because the team gave their heart and soul and we think Gareth is the perfect man for the job.

"Aside from when he goes out running, he's barely put a foot wrong. I believe we will win a World Cup in the future, but for sure, we are now more consistent challengers.

"That consistency is what we need now and that is why we signed up Gareth and Steve for another four years."

The FA will be hoping that Southgate can help guide England's national team to further success with the upcoming European Championships in 2020.
