A look back at some of the playoffs most memorable moments

23 May 2019 - 00:59

It’s squeaky bum time again as the Football League play-off finalists have now been confirmed and the countdown is on to the showpiece occasions that will be taking place this weekend.

  • Chelsea eyeing part-exchange deal to sign Osimhen
  • Chelsea & Arsenal handed blow in Bundesliga striker pursuit

  • Aston Villa will be hoping it’s second time lucky for them as they head to Wembley for a second successive season to face Derby whilst Sunderland will be looking to bounce back from League 1.

Newport fans will be praying that they can make the step up to a higher division when they take on Tranmere on Saturday 25th May and if you’re praying too that you earn a few quid then make sure you check out the best matched betting sites so you can be sure to earn a little something whilst the drama unfolds at the weekend.

So it’s all to play for and the playoffs are some of the most nerve-jangling games in English football and over the year’s we’ve been treated to some magical moments, and those, that’s let’s just say, were less than magical.

With that in mind let’s take a look back at some of the playoff’s most memorable moment:

    Leicester 3 Swindon 4-, 1993

The neutral might not shed any tears for the foxes following their stunning Premier League win a few years back, even if they have since suffered a demise, but it was a different story in the early 90s.

Just a few years after their controversial demotion, Swindon returned to the end of year showdown and this time they made no mistake in ensuring they were going up.

Glenn Hoddle, Swindon player-manager witnessed his side go 3 up only for the Foxes to pull level in a crazy second half spell. However, it was heartbreak for Leicester in the end because despite their heroics their joy was short lived as Paul Bodin’s late penalty saw Swindon go up.

    Leyton Orient 2 Rotherham 2 (Rotherham 4-3 pens)- 2014

An absolute cracker of a match, Alex Revell netted one of the great play-off goals of all time against his former club as the Yorkshire outfit fought back from 2-0 down to force extra-time and eventually penalties.

There was more drama to come in the shoot- out, and heartbreak for Orient, as Adam Collin saved two Orient spot-kicks to seal the Miller’s promotion.

    Huddersfield 0 Reading 0 (Huddersfield 4-3 pens)-2017

Nobody had given Huddersfield a sniff of going up at the start of the season and despite the 0-0 score line, the match was as enthralling as it was intense. Missed chances, great saves and crunching tackles meant you couldn’t take your eyes of this one and then there was the penalty shoot-out.

After a number of successful spot kicks, Christopher Schindler won it for the Terries after Liam Moore blazed over the bar and Jordan Obita's kick had been saved by Danny Ward.
