Premier League champions Manchester City have reportedly joined Manchester United in the race to sign Bruno Fernandes from Sporting this summer.
The Portuguese has been heavily linked with the Red Devils in the past few weeks but they are understood to have failed with an opening bid worth £40m for the 24-year-old.
The Red Devils are yet to make a renewed approach for the midfielder and Correio da Manha claims that they could potentially face fresh competition from the Citizens.
The same publication adds that the Premier League holders have made contact with Sporting president Frederico Varandas with a view to lodging a formal offer for the midfielder.
Sporting were initially eyeing more than £70m for the Nations League winner but recent reports have claimed that they are prepared to negotiate a lesser sum of around £63m.Â
Fernandes was the leading performer for Sporting last term and he managed to contribute 32 goals and 18 assists for the Lisbon club while largely operating from the centre of the park.
