Who Missed Out in the 2019 EPL Summer Transfer Window?

Who Missed Out in the 2019 EPL Summer Transfer Window?

05 September 2019 - 12:47

The summer transfer window in 2019 closed for Premier League clubs at 5pm on 8th August. While some managers will be happy with their squads, others will be wishing they had a bit more time – and even looking forward to the window re-opening in January.

  • Chelsea ready to pay £87m for Spanish striker?
  • Chelsea want to sign Nuno Tavares?

  • Here are eight clubs that missed out in the transfer window – and could pay the price over the coming months…

    At the top…

    Arsenal

Heading into the summer of 2019, Arsenal had one clear room for improvement. Defence. They signed David Luiz as like-for-like unpredictable replacement for outgoing Mustafi. Meanwhile, Kieran Tierney became their third left-back – an area which was already quite strong. However, they have failed to make up for the lack of quality in depth at centre back, with Koscielny departing.

    Chelsea

Chelsea’s transfer ban has naturally seen them missing out on incoming players. This could rule them out of a top four finish. However, with the likes of Mason Mount, Callum Hudson Odoi and Tammy Abraham coming through the ranks, they have the potential to pull off a shock. They also have a number of players returning from loans, such as Michy Batshuayi, Kurt Zouma and Christian Pulisic.

    Liverpool

If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. That seems to be the approach of European Champions, whose signings were limited to two youth players and a back-up goalkeeper. While they may have got away with the lack of depth last season, it’s only a matter of time before a serious injury leaves them with a noticeable gap in their starting 11.

    Manchester United

Wan-Bissaka and Maguire were perfect signings to shore up United’s defence. But they still lack quality in the middle of the park. Herrera’s departure sees the undoubted quality of Paul Pogba alongside unproven players like Pereira and McTominay or the inconsistency of Jesse Lingard and Fred. This could become a whole lot worse if Madrid act on their interest in Pogba.

    At the bottom…

    Bournemouth

With Callum Wilson and Josh King up top, Bournemouth’s attacking threat is undeniable. What’s less certain is the quality of their defence. The Cherries conceded 70 goals last season – the third highest tally in the league. With their two new defenders both young and inexperienced at the top level, it seems they’ll be sticking with a similar leaky set-up.

    Newcastle

Rondon and Perez played a key role for Newcastle last season. They’ve been replaced by as-yet unproven players like Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maxim. Despite Andy Carroll re-joining the ranks, it’s hard to see them pulling off another survival. It’s no surprise to see them favourites for relegation on current Redbet bets.

    Southampton

The Saints were scarily close to the drop last season. While their survival counterparts Brighton have brought in an array of players, Southampton seem to have only strengthened their front line with Che Adams and the permanent signing of Danny Ings. The signing of Kevin Danso was a move in the right direction, but at 20 years old, he might simply be one for the future.

    Watford

While they did secure their record signing in Ismaila Sarr from Rennes, Watford’s other signings were somewhat questionable. The continually inconsistent Danny Welbeck has joined their attacking ranks, while an inconsistent Craig Dawson arrived from West Brom – the leakiest defence in the top half of the Championship last season.
