Thomas Muller not pining for Man Utd transfer move

31 October 2019 - 05:33

Germany international and World Cup winning midfielder Thomas Muller is not seeking a move away from Bayern Munich to join a top Premier League club, despite the reported interest of Manchester United in the player. Muller, who has suffered a dip in form over recent seasons, is a long-term target for numerous English sides but it is Man Utd who retain the most significant interest in the talented playmaker.

  • Chelsea suffer double injury blow ahead of Villa trip
  • Gabriel Magalhaes to sign new Arsenal deal

  • Thomas Muller has found his opportunities somewhat limited over the last 12 months, partially because of the stunning form in front of goal for fellow striker Robert Lewandowski but also the fact that the Bavarian side have adjusted their playing style. The Bundesliga has become one of Europe’s top divisions and bitter rivals Borussia Dortmund have adopted a more attacking style of play, thus leading to Bayern and other title contenders to adjust accordingly. Thomas Muller operates as more of a central midfielder, as opposed to his preferred role as a “number 10”, or a centre forward just playing behind a striker.

Manchester United have struggled in front of goal and in recent months have sold two of their forwards, in Romelu Lukaku who joined Inter Milan on a permanent transfer and Chilean international Alexis Sanchez, who also joined Inter but on a one season loan deal. Marcus Rashford has been leading the line at Old Trafford, and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to add some attacking strength to his squad in the January transfer window. Man United have also struggled in the league, leading to speculation the club could be heading for relegation as opposed to European football. Muller has been vocal when asked about his ambitions for the long-term future, hinting that he would one day like to play in England. Yesterday, when asked about the rumors of a move to Manchester, Muller responded: “I don’t need a change of scenery – the weather is changing in Munich on Monday, that’s enough for me.”

The comments suggest that Muller is more than happy in Munich.

Muller then went on to say: "If the coaches only see me as a substitute in future, then I have to start having a think. I’m too ambitious for that. I’ve only just turned 30, I'm top fit and I'm hungry for success, both with Bayern and also personally. I'm absolutely convinced that I can help the team with my abilities.”

Muller is widely regarded as one of the best attacking players of all time to have come from Germany and is hopeful that a spell in Bayern’s first team will allow him to continue chasing international goalscoring and appearance records.
