Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud Set for Inter Move

Chelsea’s Olivier Giroud Set for Inter Move

21 November 2019 - 14:52

Inter manager Antonio Conte wants to bring the Chelsea man to San Siro, according to Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport. According to Conte, Giroud could provide him with backup options upfront, with Romelu Lukaku who is flourishing after a troubled spell with Manchester United came to an end at the beginning of the 2019/2020 season.

  • Chelsea midfielder looking forward to London derby vs Spurs
  • Arsenal in the front row to sign Dutch striker

  • The French forward’s contract at the Bridge expires at the end of the current season, and given the youth takeover is performing exceptionally well at Chelsea, under the tutelage of Frank Lampard, giving Giroud a new contract has not been mooted. With the rise of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, and Mitchy Batshuayi, Giroud has fallen further down the pecking order, and a transfer to the Serie A could be a good move. As fans engage in Betway soccer betting, they will also be keen on what will be happening on the transfer front this January.

Conte and Giroud have previously worked together when the Italian was the manager at Chelsea, having signed the French international from Arsenal. Giroud has so far made only six appearances in all competitions for the Blues, scoring one goal. Despite continually being overlooked at club level, the tall attacker remains a regular fixture for his French national team, where he has so far accumulated 94 caps, scoring 37 goals in the process.

Inter are currently doing well in the Serie-A, sitting second, a point behind Juventus, and seven points ahead of third-placed Lazio. Currently with only one established striker in Romelu Lukaku, and Martinez who is more of a midfielder, Giroud’s capture should most definitely ease off the pressure on the Belgian international. The Italian giants are competing on all fronts this season, and adding an experienced attacker could not come at a better time.

Lukaku sits second on the scoring charts with 9 Serie A goals, behind Lazio’s Ciro Immobile who is currently on 14. An injury or suspension to the reliable striker could be hugely devastating to Inter’s push for their first Scudetto in 9 years, and a forward of Giroud’s caliber is needed. Dortmund in the race too?

There are reports that Germany powerhouse Borussia Dortmund have also joined in the race to sign Olivier Giroud this January. It is just over a month before the January transfer window is officially opened, and we are certainly going to hear a lot of rumors. However, there is some strong interest for the French forward in Germany, and Borussia could be ready to battle Inter for his signature.

Dortmund’s English prospect Jadon Sancho started the season in prolific form, scoring and creating goals week after week, but his form has seemingly dipped. There were reports that he may have requested to leave Dortmund for the English Premier League, and if that report holds any water, then Dortmund could be serious about adding Giroud to their ranks.

    More suitors still to come

Giroud will definitely want to play more to be considered for the upcoming Euro 2020, and he knows his chances are limited in a Chelsea shirt. It may be too early to call, given, other premier league sides will also want to bolster their sides this coming January transfer window. Inter and Dortmund could be the only concrete suitors so far, but we should expect interest from more top clubs as well.
