Championship hot-shots: five second-tier stars that are attracting Premier League clubs

13 January 2020 - 18:06

The Championship is a hotbed of talent, but every so often, a player makes his mark on the second tier in emphatic style, prompting calls for Premier League sides to come in and bring them to the big time. Here are five that could make it in the top flight.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • Jarrod Bowen

Born in Leominster, Herefordshire, Jarrod Bowen signed for Hull City in 2014 from Hereford United. Since then, the lively winger has netted over 50 goals in over 120 appearances, establishing himself as one of the Championship hottest prospects at just 23 years of age.

If Hull City don’t make the play-offs then Bowen will likely be a target for the top tier, so watch the UK bookmakers shorten their odds in January as the Championship becomes more open.

    Said Benrahma

Algerian international Said Benrahma moved from Ligue 2 side LB Chateauroux ahead of the 2018-19 Championship season to promotion-hopefuls Brentford. The tricky winger has played nearly 60 games for the Bees, scoring 13 goals and making 21 more.

Brentford’s position in the second tier play-off positions has been helped by the three-capped Algerian trickster and he will be vital to their promotion hopes once more in 2019-20, so much so that Brentford placed a £30 million price tag on his head midway through last season.

    Jayden Bogle

Jayden Bogle signed for Derby County in 2015 as a youngster and made his breakthrough in the 2018-19 season. Since then, Bogle has registered over 50 appearances in a Derby shirt, scoring two goals and registering 12 assists.

The right-back came into his own under Frank Lampard and the 19-year-old has a very bright future ahead of him. His good form last season was rewarded with an England Under-20 call-up in May this year where he notched up four caps in the 2019 Toulon Tournament.

    Joao Carvalho

20 times capped by Portugal’s Under-20s, Nottingham Forest’s Joao Carvalho has ripped up the Championship in the past two seasons. 57 appearances, six goals and nine assists later and the Portuguese is a wanted man and Forest will have to try hard to keep the midfielder in January.

    Matheus Pereira

Although currently on-loan at West Brom from Portuguese side Sporting CP, Matheus Pereira is tipped for big things. Still only 23 years of age, winger Pereira has been on-loan at three clubs in the past three seasons and so may well be looking for something permanent elsewhere.

The winger has played in 23 of West Brom’s games this season and has played a major role in the Baggies’ storm to the top of the second tier, scoring five goals and making 14 more. Pereira will certainly be a thorn in the rest of the Championship as the Baggies aim for automatic promotion. If West Brom don’t make it, then Pereira will surely be snapped up by a Premier League side.
