Hitzfeld stunned by Getafe

Hitzfeld stunned by Getafe

03 April 2008 - 23:39

Bayern Munich boss Ottmar Hitzfeld feels that his side only have themselves to blame after spurning several great chances to wrap up victory in Thursday nights Quarter Final match in the UEFA Cup against Getafe. Luca Toni gave Bayern the lead, but Cosmin Contra equalised late on.

  • Fabrizio Romano updates on Nicolas Jackson's future at Chelsea
  • Man Utd serious about signing Rafael Leao
  • “We played superbly in the first half and should have been 2-0 up" Hitzfeld said. "We had a goal scoring opportunity every two or three minutes.

“In the second half, Getafe had fifteen minutes of pressure, but then we seemed to regain control of the match. We had massive counter attacking chances, so should have gone 2-0 ahead" he added.

“But if you don’t take your chances, it’s obvious you are going to come under pressure before the end. Getafe were not happy with the 1-0 scoreline and played attacking football. They are a team with an incredible character.

“They forced the equalising goal. We wasted the chance to get a positive result, but we still have a great chance of qualifying, but we could have made it a lot easier on ourselves. A 3-1 or 4-1 scoreline would have been more justified tonight.

“We will have to travel to Getafe full of concentration, but we are also strong away from home and can win in Getafe. I am still optimistic that we can do it."
