Victor Osimhen to become Africas most expensive player in Napoli move

Victor Osimhen to become Africa's most expensive player in Napoli move

16 July 2020 - 06:09

Napoli are on the verge of completing a surprising £76.4 million move for Lille striker Victor Osimhen, with the player putting pen to paper on a deal for four years at his new club. Osimhen, 21, has recently caught the eye in Ligue 1 with a number of impressive performances, leading the Lille strike force in a solo role and returning 13 goals last campaign.

  • Chelsea midfielder looking forward to London derby vs Spurs
  • Man Utd expected to offload 24-year-old attacker

  • Osimhen emerged at German side VfL Wolfsburg before completing a switch to Belgian side Charleroi, who immediately transferred the Lagos-born player to Lille in a swift 5 million transfer deal.

L'Equipe has reported that the deal will be wrapped up today, Thursday, and is likely to beat the record paid to Lille when Arsenal transferred Nicolas Pepe last summer in a deal worth £72 million.

Napoli are looking for a new striker and have been scouring Europe for some time for the complete player, and are confident that Osimhen has the skills that will make him a world-beater in Serie A.

Osimhen has appeared 9 times for Nigeria's national team and has returned an acceptable four goals at international level.  It is understood that the player has been signed in consideration of his potential as opposed to his recent returns in front of goal.

Numerous top pundits in Nigeria including Mosope Ominiyi have predicted a glowing future for the striker after completing his move to Serie A, surely boosted by the fact that one of Africa's most famous players Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looks set to be at the end of his career.

Some media outlets are reporting that Tottenham are trying to hijack a move for the Lille man with a late transfer bid for Osimhen, but this can not be confirmed. A move by Spurs would not be a particularly strange one, considering there are general question marks over the long-term future of star forward Harry Kane, who has been persistently linked with a transfer to Real Madrid or to Barcelona.
