Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp has won a poll put on by the BBC where viewers voted for the best manager in last season’s Premier League. Klopp came out top with 49 percent of the vote, far ahead of his nearest rival, Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder in second place with 32 percent of the vote.
Interestingly there was no sign of Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola in the shortlist. Instead we saw surprise nominations for the likes of Burnley’s Sean Dyche, Wolves’ Nuno Espirito Santo and Leicester City’s Brendan Rodgers.
Plus Frank Lampard got a nomination for guiding Chelsea to a Champions League place and an appearance in the forthcoming FA Cup Final. So was Klopp worthy of the award?
Klopp finally guides Liverpool to glory
Liverpool completely dominated the 2019/20 Premier League. Barring that loss at Watford, Klopp’s team were simply unstoppable. What was remarkable was just how balanced the Liverpool squad was.
Alongside international stars like Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, Klopp brought in young sensations like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones. Above all, it was the fact that Klopp finally delivered the Premier League title to Anfield that will be his crowning glory.
Wilder’s outstanding achievements at Sheffield United
Most people had Sheffield United down as favourites to go straight back down to the Championship. But Chris Wilder managed to give his team the organisation and resolve to take on the biggest teams.
While Sheffield United’s style of play might not have been pretty, recent wins against Chelsea and Tottenham showed that the Blades could punch above their weight. Plus Wilder routinely proved to be able to deliver the funniest post-match interviews. But can Wilder guide the Blades to European football next season? There’s more info here about how the bookmakers think football betting will develop in the coming months.
Lampard’s impressive work at Chelsea
Some people might say that Lampard didn’t deserve to be in the shortlist given how Chelsea have been heavyweights in Premier League football recently.
But we have to remember that Lampard came to a team that had just lost its star player in the form of Eden Hazard. Plus he managed to put together a talented and youthful squad while negotiating the transfer ban. Even with a big goalkeeper problem, Chelsea still manage to be one of the Premier League’s most deadly teams.
Santo’s remarkable progress at Wolves
Wolves have quietly become the dark horses of the Premier League. While the likes of Adama Traore have been dazzling on the pitch, it’s all down to the managerial skill of Nuno Espirito Santo.
Santo has managed to make Wolves a constant threat despite having played a long and exhausting season with their Europa League commitments.
Will Dyche stay at Burnley?
Burnley are another Premier League that might not be pretty to watch, but they can always get decent results. From gaining their first away win at Manchester United to claiming a final place in the top half of the Premier League, it’s been another strong season for Burnley.
Hopefully Sean Dyche can be encouraged to stay at Turf Moor as it’s hard to see how the Clarets would fare without him.
Rodgers makes the Foxes shine again
While the end of the season was a disappointment for Leicester City, it was still a decent campaign from the Foxes.
Brendan Rodgers’ team was hit by injuries late on and they never managed to regain the impressive form that they showed in the first half of the season. But given Rodgers’ pedigree, we’re expecting big things from the Foxes in 2020/21.
