Manchester United have entered talks with Villarreal over a possible summer deal for Pau Torres, Tuttomercato reports.
The Red Devils are determined to sign a new centre-back this summer, despite handing a new contract to Eric Bailly.
Torres has been identified as the top target, and they have now opened talks with the Yellow Submarines for the player.
Torres, who is also on the radar of Real Madrid, has a release clause worth £56m, which will become active this summer.
The La Liga outfit are prepared to negotiate a lesser fee for the Spaniard if United are willing to offer a player in exchange.
The Red Devils are currently second in the league standings, and on course to secure Champions League football.
They can end the season on a high by winning the Europa League, which would end a four-year trophy drought.
Meanwhile, Torres is open to a fresh challenge in the Premier League. Manchester City are also keeping tabs on him.
