Premier League Matches Won by the Biggest Margin This Season

Premier League Matches Won by the Biggest Margin This Season

26 December 2021 - 18:45

This year’s Premier League season was exciting from many points of view. On the one hand, the clubs brought a lot of young talent to the turf for the first time, giving rising stars the chance to shine. On the other hand, it was the first season since the pandemic that was played more or less normally.

  • Predicted Chelsea line-up (4-2-3-1) vs Spurs, Gilchrist starts
  • Chelsea midfielder looking forward to London derby vs Spurs

  • Needless to say, we had lots of exciting matches to watch and many occasions to root for our favourites. And, of course, lots of matches with unusually large margins which surprised everyone from analysts to those placing football bets in Mozambique.

    Man City - Norwich 5-0

Right from the start, title holders Manchester City were seen as the team most likely to win the current Premier League season. Well, the match played by the Citizens against Norwich on August 21 seemed to confirm what most fans expected: playing at home, Manchester City beat Norwich City 5-0.

This shouldn't have come as a surprise, though - since joining the Premier League, Pep Guardiola’s boys have a history of winning by such a margin.

    Man City - Arsenal 5-0

But when Man City faced the Gunners on August 28, it became obvious that they are determined to hold on to their title. Playing at home once again, the Citizens have given out a good beating to Arsenal, clearly dominating the pitch, and executing the vast majority of passes and shots on target.

    Watford - Liverpool 0-5

Another team to clearly make its presence felt on the turf this season was Liverpool. Clearly aiming to retake the crown, the Reds have had an incredible run in the Premier League so far, including one of the five-goal victories of the season against Watford.

Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino has proven with a hat-trick in this match what a prolific goalscorer he is.

    Man United - Liverpool 0-5

Losing a match 0-5 is bad. Losing a match 0-5 with Cristiano Ronaldo on your side is humiliating - yet it happened on October 24. To make things worse, Manchester United suffered this defeat from Liverpool at home, playing at Old Trafford.

The last time United lost with a margin larger than this was in 1895 - also to Liverpool.

    Man City - Leeds 7-0

There are two matches tied for the title of “the games with the biggest margin” this season. One of them is Man City’s home game against Leeds United that ended with a spectacular 7-0 win.

Leeds did pretty well in the match, executing a few shots on target but they couldn’t stand up to the Citizens’ form and skill.

Foden’s eighth-minute goal was the team’s 500th in the Premier League under Pep Guardiola.

    Chelsea - Norwich 7-0

The only other 7-0 victory in the Premier League season doesn’t involve the two most successful teams (so far) but Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea. But this shouldn’t come as a surprise: the Blues have a history of winning Premier League matches with a margin of 7 or above. For Norwich, in turn, this loss was tied for their greatest so far, suffered in 2013 to Man City.
