Chelsea appear to be closing in on the signing of Yael Thebault, the French centre‑back currently with Stade Rennais. A product of Rennes' academy, the 18‑year‑old defender signed his first professional contract extending until 2028, highlighting the club’s long‑term faith in his potential - even as he recovers from a knee ligament injury.
It is understood that the Blues will sign Thebault and let him return to his club for the 2025/26 campaign, as they will likely offer a seven-year deal to the versatile defender. Rennes and Chelsea have a long-term relationship and have transferred many players in the past, and bringing in youth talent is one of Chelsea's focus points since Todd Boehly became chairman of the club.
Standing over 190 cm tall, Thebault combines aerial presence with composure and ball‑playing instincts, even though his passing and technique are still early in development.
Thebault ticks the boxes: teenage potential, international youth experience, tactical versatility, and the mental fortitude suited for Premier League demands. It's clear why Chelsea are watching closely.
