Manchester United are reportedly keen on landing Everton midfielder James Garner on a cut-price deal next month.
The Red Devils are short in the midfield department at the moment with Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo ruled out with injuries.
The duo are anticipated to return by mid-January but the hierarchy are still keen on adding an option in the heart of the midfield.
Garner's current deal with the Toffees expires at the end of June and United could make a surprise move to re-sign their graduate.
The midfielder was deemed surplus to requirements by the club in the past, but they have been impressed by his progress made at the Toffees.
With Elliot Anderson proving expensive to buy this winter, the Red Devils are prepared to pursue a bargain deal for Garner instead.
Everton are currently calm about the situation, and they could decide to keep Garner in their ranks and let him leave on a free transfer.
