Chelsea are in contact with the representatives of Sporting CP defender Ousmane Diomande ahead of a potential transfer this summer.
The Blues were expected to land a new centre-back last summer, but decided against it despite the long-term injury to Levi Colwill.
They did not pursue a new solution last winter either, but the club are bound to invest in the department at the end of the campaign.
Diomande has now emerged as a top target for the west London giants and could be signed for a discount despite a high release clause.
The defender's current deal has a release clause worth 80 million euros, but he could be purchased for less at the end of the ongoing season.
Diomande has his sights on playing in the Premier League and the Blues are one of the many contenders to land his signature.
Arsenal, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are also in the mix for the 22-year-old, who could leave Sporting CP this summer.
