Chelsea could contemplate an approach for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba if Enzo Fernandez is sold during the summer transfer window.
The Blues are currently assessing the future of Fernandez, who has refused to rule out a summer exit. Real Madrid are keen on the Argentine and a deal could materialise.
In case Fernandez heads out, the Blues are expected to pursue a marquee replacement and have earmarked Baleba as a prime target to bolster their midfield department.
Baleba is a different profile of a midfielder compared to Fernandez. He is primarily a number six, but has the ability to operate in a more central role when required.
The Cameroonian has had an average season with Brighton, but he is still expected to secure a big-money move away from the South Coast.
Manchester United are also firm admirers of the highly-rated midfielder, who could be signed for less than £100 million during the summer.
