Man Utd seek to conclude long Christos Mouzakitis pursuit

Manchester United are hoping to finally win the long-running transfer battle for Christos Mouzakitis, with the Olympiacos midfielder still viewed as one of the most exciting young players in European football.

  • United have tracked Mouzakitis for some time and the feeling around the rumour is that they may now be ready to push harder this summer. The 19-year-old has already built a strong reputation in Greece, not just as a promising academy product, but as a player trusted in senior football. For a club like United, who are trying to reshape their midfield with younger, more technically secure options, Mouzakitis is exactly the type of signing that fits the project.

He is not a flashy attacking midfielder, but he is calm, intelligent and progressive in possession. Mouzakitis likes to receive the ball deep, move it quickly and help his team control the rhythm of matches. That profile is attractive to United because their midfield has often lacked composure under pressure. He would not arrive as the finished product, but he has the tools to become a long-term Premier League midfielder.

His season stats help explain the interest. Across the current campaign, Mouzakitis has made around 39 senior appearances for Olympiacos, including 19 starts, with roughly 2,000 minutes played. He has contributed one goal and two assists, which is modest from a pure output perspective, but his value is not really measured in goals. For a teenager playing central midfield, the bigger point is that he has already become a regular part of a major Greek club's first-team squad.

The transfer fee could be significant. United have previously been linked with an offer in the region of €28m, but Olympiacos are believed to value him closer to €40m. That is a big price for a player still developing, although it also reflects his age, contract situation and the level of competition around him.

United are not alone in the race. Arsenal have been linked, while Brighton, Aston Villa and Wolves have all been mentioned as Premier League admirers. Across Europe, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal have also been credited with interest at different stages.
