Julian Ryerson wanted by Manchester United

Manchester United are being linked with a summer move for Julian Ryerson, with the Borussia Dortmund full-back emerging as a serious defensive target ahead of the transfer window.

  • The Norwegian international has been one of Dortmund's most consistent performers this season, and it is easy to see why United are taking notice. Ryerson is not a glamorous, headline-chasing name, but he is reliable, experienced, tactically flexible and extremely effective. For a club that needs stability as much as star power, that makes him a very sensible option.

United's interest is believed to be connected to possible movement in their own defence. Noussair Mazraoui has been linked with a move away, with Juventus among the clubs mentioned, and that could create space for a new right-back or wing-back. Ryerson would fit that role well. He can play on either side, he works hard, defends aggressively and offers genuine attacking delivery from wide areas.

His season stats are excellent. In the Bundesliga, Ryerson has made 31 appearances, producing 15 assists from full-back. He has also completed 381 sprints, made 1,777 intensive runs and covered more than 288 kilometres, showing the physical engine that makes him so valuable. Defensively, he has won more than 200 tackles, while also contributing 118 crosses. Those numbers show why he is not just a safe option, but an active part of Dortmund's attacking structure.

For United, that balance would be important. They need defenders who can survive one-v-one duels, but also contribute higher up the pitch. Ryerson is not a purely defensive full-back. He gets forward, combines well and delivers quality into the box. With United trying to become more dynamic and aggressive, that kind of profile could appeal.

The fee would be manageable by Premier League standards. Dortmund are believed to value him at around £26m, while other estimates suggest a deal could cost closer to £30m to £35m. His contract runs until 2028, so Dortmund do not have to sell, but Ryerson is 28 and this may be one of the last chances for them to receive a strong fee.

There may be competition, but United's need could put them in a strong position if they decide to move quickly. Ryerson would not arrive as a superstar signing, but he could be exactly the kind of practical addition the squad needs.
