Kanu eyes national honours

Kanu eyes national honours

11 June 2008 - 00:04

Portsmouth striker Nwankwo Kanu has revealed he will be continuing his international career; for as long as he believes Nigeria can lift an international honour. Kanu helped Portsmouth to FA Cup success this year.

  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?
  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?

  • Kanu told Sunday Sunsport: "I thought I should call it quits after the 2008 Nations in Ghana, but each time I remember that I do not have a Nations Cup gold medal and that I have not scored at any of the five Nations Cups I played in, I would want to go on till I get there.

"The World Cup and Nations Cup medals are still missing in my cabinet and I would wish to win gold in either of them before I retire. I think it is possible. My faith is strong on achieving that.

"I started playing football when I was very young and because of my God-given skills, I made it very early to the Super Eagles and I have been in the limelight for about 15 years now. It started with the Flying Eagles in 1993, Golden Eaglet (1993), Dream Team 1 (1996) and Super Eagles from 1994.

"People say that I am old and therefore, should quit. It is such that I have seen players who are older than me coming to the national team and leaving. Some of them who are my seniors even take me as their senior and I take it as such.

"It's just like Lukman Haruna, who won the Under-17 World Cup last year with Nigeria is part of us now, if he starts to play for the Super Eagles, after some years, people will begin to say that he is old and should throw in the towel."
