Pompey sign Greece captain Basinas

02 February 2009 - 14:54

Angelos Basinas, the Greece captain, have joined Portsmouth for an 18 month long loan deal from Greek club AEK Athens.

  • Chelsea join Liverpool & Man Utd in race to sign 26yo
  • Barcelona identify Arsenal midfielder as key transfer target

  • Portsmouth have signed another Greek player in less than 24 hours - Angelos Basinas - a defensive midfielder from Greek club AEK Athens. Basinas follows Gekas who signed hours ago in a loan deal until the end of the season from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.

Basinas has 97 caps for Greece, and had a great season in Real Mallorca. He joined them in 2006 snubbing offers from Everton and Birmingham City. The veteran helped Real Mallorca escape the relegation zone and helped the club reach 7th position in the following season.

He is known for his determination and hard work - something that Portsmouth really needs after they lost LLassana Diarra to Real Madrid.

Pompey manager, Tony Adams is delighted to have the Greek on board to help his team fight back to finish in the top half of the table
