Preview: Newcastle vs Wigan

Preview: Newcastle vs Wigan

22 October 2011 - 08:58

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew certainly didn't expect such a good start to the season for the Toon, who host Wigan this weekend in the Premier League. The 4th placed Geordies have a stunning opportunity to jump to 3rd in the Premier League.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • Alan Pardew admits he too has been surprised by Newcastle's great start to the season, but remained coy when asked about the prospect of European football this year.

Newcastle currently lie 4th in the Premier League with 16 points from 8 games; and still remain unbeaten this year.

Wigan's recent form, on the other hand, has been quite disastrous with five defeats in their last five outings. Roberto Martinez knows that this form has to change. Newcastle won't be the most ideal place to stop the rot, as Wigan haven't won in their last six visits to St. James' Park.

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez will need to stop Demba Ba if he is to ensure his side get anything out of this game. The striker has bagged 12 goals in just 15 games for Newcastle.

The Toon will enjoy the return to action of Fabricio Coloccini, and Alan Smith is available again too.

Wigan striker Hugo Rodallega will also be in the starting line up for the first time since recovering from injury.

    Eyefootball prediction: Newcastle 2-0 Wigan

    first goalscorer: Demba Ba
