Sunderland sack Steve Bruce

After months of speculation, Sunderland have parted company with Steve Bruce. The sacking comes after a worrying start to the season with just 2 wins in 13 games. Sunderland have installed assistant Eric Black as interim manager.

  • The early favorite to replace Steve Bruce is Martin O'Neill, and chairman Ellis Short begins his search for a successor today.

"It is my job to act in the best interests of our football club and I can assure everyone that this is not a decision that I have taken lightly," chairman Ellis Short said.

"Sadly results this season have simply not been good enough and I feel the time is right to make a change.

"I would like to personally place on record my thanks to him for his significant contribution to our football club over the past two and a half years and everyone here at Sunderland naturally wishes him the very best for the future."

Other names linked with the vacated role include surprise candidate Guus Hiddink whilst Frank Rijkaard has also been linked with a move to the Premier League.
