Everton manager Roberto Martinez to reward Leighton Baines with a new contract

06 September 2013 - 11:37

Everton manager Roberto Martinez has iterated that the club will make Leighton Baines feel 'wanted' at the Merseyside club by offering him a new contract.

The former Latics manager had hinted yesterday that initial talks had began with the full-back over a new deal following Manchester United's failure to acquire his services from Goodison Park.

  • Chelsea to move for former Arsenal goalkeeper?
  • Former Chelsea boss to replace Erik ten Hag at Man Utd?

  • According to Sky Sports, Martinez has claimed that the English defender "deserves" fresh talks over a new contract due to his immense contribution to the Toffees over the past few years.

Martinez told Sky Sports : "Leighton is a massively important player for us and the future of the football club. We want to do anything we can to reward that and he deserves the appreciation and deserves to know how we feel about him,"

"It's all positive. He's been an outstanding performer for Everton for years and now clearly he's at the peak of his career and we're going to make sure he feels that warmth from the football club and from a contractual point of view exactly the same."
