England under-21 manager demands foreign player quota

14 October 2013 - 14:49

England's under-21 manager wants the Championship and lower leagues to have a foreign player quota to ensure that the best young British talent is able to progress into the top flight to compete with the best foreign players.

  • Chelsea join Liverpool & Man Utd in race to sign 26yo
  • Barcelona identify Arsenal midfielder as key transfer target

  • Southgate has criticised the way that some Championship sides are already filling up their squad with foreign players.

"The lower divisions should be a breeding ground for young English players," Southgate said. "I can understand why Premier League clubs want to bring in the best foreign players.

"If foreign players are coming into the Championship, though, they cannot be the very best because of the very nature of the league they are being brought to play in. There should be a strong emphasis on the Championship being English -- or at least British -- players."
